Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)
The gold standard operation for varicose veins

EVLT is a relatively new technique in Canada with only around 50 doctors offering the procedure nationwide.

We recommend EVLT to patients with venous insufficiency of trunkal veins (large, high pressure veins in the leg). It is rapidly replacing vein stripping and ligation as the gold standard operation for varicose veins. these branch veins without treating the main trunks leads to failure of treatments, early recurrences and risk of chronic venous stasis disease.

The most common sites for EVLT are the greater saphenous vein ( runs from the groin to the ankle ) and the lesser

saphenous vein ( runs from behind the knee to the outside of the ankle). In people with large ( > 5mm ) varicose veins there is a high likelihood of having insufficiency of one of these veins.

EVLT closes the vein using laser energy directed through a laser fiber inserted into the vein under ultrasound guidance. There is no post operative scarring on the skin. ( the puncture site for the laser fiber is only 2mm in length )

Once the large veins at the root of the problem are closed the remaining varicose veins are either removed by ambulatory phlebectomy or more commonly by special sclerotherapy techniques.

EVLT is not covered by OHIP but there are many advantages of EVLT over stripping.
They include:

Local anesthesia instead of general
No leg scarring
Significantly less post procedural pain
Little to no downtime or missed work ( 10-14 days common with stripping )
Short procedure time - 1-1 ½ hours
Fewer complications (nerve injury, thigh hematoma)
Better results - 94% efficacy
Done in our comfortable operating room not the hospital
Immediate resolution of venous symptoms
