Arrive early, 15 to 20 minutes before your booked procedure time. We are virtually always on time and sometimes a little ahead of schedule.

Review procedure with Dr Saunders and ask any final questions about the process. Dr Saunders will walk you through the consent form at this time if it hasn't already been completed.

Meet the staff assisting Dr Saunders and get changed into a gown.

Your leg will then be photographed for before and after documentation.

Repeat ultrasound exam is then performed to assess the best point along the vein to enter it and formulate a treatment plan specific to your leg.

Your leg is then prepped with a sterilizing solution and draped with sterile surgical drapes to maintain complete sterility though out the procedure.

Dr Saunders will then freeze the entry point on your leg with local anesthetic and pass a small needle into the vein under ultrasound guidance. A thin catheter (hollow plastic tube) is then passed into the vein followed by the laser fiber. The total length of the incision is only about 2mm.

A dilute solution of local anesthetic is injected along the length of the vein using the ultrasound to guide its exact placement. This has several functions including freezing the area around the vein so you won't have any discomfort during the procedure. The fluid also separates normal healthy tissue around the vein from the heat of the laser preventing damage to these structures.

The position of the laser fiber in your vein is then re-verified by two different techniques prior to turning it on.

The laser is then turned on and slowly withdrawn through the vein. This is normally a painless part of the procedure but some people feel some tugging on the vein. Dr Saunders goes as slow as is necessary to complete this process in a way that is safe and comfortable for you. In total this step of the procedure only takes 2-5 minutes.

Depending on your exact pattern of veins, some sclerotherapy may be carried out at this point to close large branches arising off the vein being lasered. This is also painless.

The laser fiber is removed, a band aid placed on your leg (no sutures are needed because the incision is so small) followed by your compression stocking and you are done.

We ask you to take a short walk either in the hall or outside if you chose to ensure good blood flow in your deep veins before you take a car ride home. If you have long ride home you should stop every 15 to 20 minutes and take a short walk around to keep the blood moving.

Detailed post procedure instructions will be reviewed with you and are available on this web site under post EVLT instructions.
